It seems much of the country is still struggling to see summer, with grey and overcast weather across the country and possible thunderstorms today in Waikato and Waitomo.

Persistant southerly winds have brought cloudy weather and cooler temperatures to the start of summer.

It was those southerlies that "took the top off the summer temperatures and made it not quite so pleasant for those going to the beach" last month, according to Meteorologist Peter Little.

"January, things can sometimes take a while to sort of get themselves sorted out," he said.

"And we've had a lot of southerlies, which has meant places in the east, and places like Wellington have had quite a lot of cloud."

However, February should see more settled weather across the country as a large area of high pressure over northern parts of the country brings lighter winds and mostly fine weather - despite the occasional shower as we head into the Waitangi Day weekend.

"The winds are going to be fairly light for most places, and it's also going to bring sort of mostly fine weather," Little said.

But, he warns, while thunderstorms are looking less likely, there could still be a few showers during the day on Waitangi Day.
