The Education Minister is welcoming structured literacy and numeracy packs for primary and intermediate Māori-medium kura.

The packs include yearly guidance, lesson plans and activities, at all 310 schools using the Māori-medium curriculum.

They will also carry out reo Māori phonics checks at 20, 40 and 55 weeks.

Erica Stanford says they start receiving the packs from Term 1, benefiting about 27,000 pupils.

She says it's the first time these structured approaches are being used at the schools.

"This is the first time children learning through te reo Māori are being taught using structured approaches in a way designed specifically for them.

"We're ensuring tamariki and their teachers have access to the tools they need to succeed and learning isn't left to chance."
