Police say a youth has been arrested, in the third day of a manhunt for a person alleged to have threatened a police officer with a gun in Palmerston North.
Inspector Ross Grantham said a young person was found at a Whanganui address, about 8:10pm on Thursday, and "specialist teams [were] deployed immediately".
The hunt had begun on Tuesday, after a person with a warrant for his arrest was found by officers who had attempted to take him into custody. He then became agitated and aimed a firearm at an officer in the city's Brentwood Avenue before fleeing, police said.
On Wednesday cordons were put up around the street after a possible sighting, but they had since been taken down.
Grantham had told RNZ on Wednesday that there was not thought to be any immediate threat to the community, and police knew who they were hunting. And he called on the fugitive to turn himself in.
After the arrest on Thursday, Grantham said he hoped news of the arrest meant the community would sleep a little easier: "We understand the real concern Wednesday night's incident created in the community, and getting the alleged offender off the street has been a priority for staff in the Central Police District."
