Four people have been injured in a jet boat incident at Skippers Canyon in Queenstown.

St John said a helicopter has taken one of the four, in moderate condition, to Dunedin Hospital.

A spokesperson said the other three were in moderate and minor conditions.

They said two helicopters were called to the scene just after 5pm.

A spokesperson for Skippers Canyon Jet confirmed the incident involved one of their commercial trips.

The spokesperson said two passengers plus two uninjured family members in the group were taken out of the area by helicopter.

"Seven remaining passengers were taken to the Lakes District Hospital in Queenstown for assessment and the jet boat driver was uninjured."

The jetboat company said Maritime New Zealand and the police have been notified.

At this stage the cause of the incident was unknown, the Skippers Canyon Jet spokesperson said and no further details were available at this time.

Police said they were not required to attend and referred questions to St John.
