Police have released the name of a woman who died after being hit by a car in central Wellington.
Ursula Machtel, 66, formerly of Freiburg, Germany, was taken to hospital in a critical condition after the crash on Courtenay Place, on Monday night.
Witnesses told RNZ that people at the scene rushed to help Machtel, and to stop the elderly driver of the car.
The police investigation is continuing.
