A Waikato road has reopened following a head-on crash involving a motorist fleeing police on Saturday.

State Highway 2 had been closed in both directions between Avon Road and Koheroa Road, with diversions in place.

Two people, including the driver of a stolen car, remained in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

Traffic cameras spotted the car travelling on Auckland's Dominion Road just before 1.30 on Saturday afternoon.

The driver fled at high speed on the wrong side of the road after police approached, and was tracked by the Eagle helicopter travelling south.

As he tried to avoid a set of spikes near Pokeno, the driver swerved into the opposite lane and crashed head on into another vehicle.
