A Central Otago school says temperatures in its school library would sometimes drop to -4C before it got a community grant for air conditioning.
Tarras School principal Alice Casey said the school library was unusable for several months a year due to the lack of heating and cooling.
Tarras School is one of 10 national recipients of a $1000 Powering Your Community grant from Pulse Energy.
Casey said the grant will be used to buy an air conditioning unit for the library building.
"We have a library that we love to visit however we either get hypothermia or hyperthermia," Casey said.
"In terms one and four, it is sweltering, and in terms two and three, we can't use it - with the temperature inside dropping as low as -4C."
"We don't have a public library in Tarras, and we would love to invite our local playgroup to use our library year-round."
Pulse Energy chief executive Sharnie Warren said the huge number of grant applications received last year highlighted the incredibly valuable work being done in communities right around New Zealand.
"We are proud to help Tarras School make their library a place where tamariki can learn all year long."
Pulse Energy - which supplies electricity, gas and broadband to New Zealand homes - launched the Powering Your Community Fund in 2023.
