Wellington Water says a mystery sewage spill was responsible for reports of a bad smell in the central city.
The water company said it was notified of an odour near the intersection of Everton Terrace and The Terrace on Wednesday morning.
A spokesperson said the source of the stench was located to a sewage spill on the street, however the source of the spill was unknown.
They said no issues were found with the sewage network and there was no evidence that sewage had entered the stormwater network and discharged to the sea.
The spokesperson said the area had been disinfected.
Earlier on Wednesday, an RNZ reporter said he encountered a wafting 'sewage-like' smell around the Terrace area.
