An Auckland North Shore woman says a person knocked on her door claiming to do a storm damage survey for the council, but they confirmed their staff were not doing house-to-house checks.

The Beach Haven resident said in a post on Facebook the "young woman" told her two more people from the council would follow-up with questions.

"She had no Council ID and didn't visit any other houses - I checked with Council and of course, they have no staff doing house-to-house checks.

"It felt more like she was checking the place out. I'll let the neighbours know to stay alert," the community page post said.

In a comment on the post, Auckland North Shore councillor Richard Hills said it was "disappointing and worrying".

"Please if anyone experiences this please ask for council ID immediately (which they won't have) then ask the person to leave.

"If they don't leave you can call 111. After they leave please log with police on 105 with a description of the person," Hills said.
