Fire crews were called to a chemical reaction at a building in Central Wellington.

Around 40 construction workers were evacuated from the building on Wednesday afternoon.

The chemical reaction occurred at Education House, the former Ministry of Education building, on the corner of Bowen St and The Terrace.

RNZ understands Education House was undergoing earthquake strengthening. The Education Ministry confirmed workers were not on-site.

Fire and Emergency spokesperson Murray Dunbar said tradespeople working in the building mixed some epoxy resins together, which reacted, causing fumes and smoke.

The building was evacuated, and the reaction has now been contained.

After 3pm, workers were able to re-enter the site, FENZ said.

Dunbar said there have been no reports of injuries, and there is no threat to the wider public.
