A five metre deep sinkhole that opened up in Papamoa on Thursday was caused by a broken wastewater pipe that started to fill with sand.
Tauranga City Council said contractors have secured the site on Golden Sands Drive and wastewater is being redirected to a nearby pump station.
The council said staff were working to determine the exact reason for the wastewater pipe failure.
Traffic management is in place with two lanes operating on Golden Sands Drive.
A council spokesperson said there might be noise and odour while wastewater is redirected, and slight traffic delays.
