Firefighters continue to respond to a fire at a scrap yard in the Auckland suburb of East Tamaki.

Crews have been battling the East Tamaki Road blaze since just after 6am, when they were called to the yard and found multiple cars on fire.

A local resident told RNZ they heard loud blasts and popping noises at about 5am before they spotted smoke.

The fire was contained about 7.30am, and Fire and Emergency scaled back its response.

Currently there were three crews and a fire investigator on the scene.

Levin fire

Elsewhere, firefighters responded to a house fire in the Horowhenua town of Levin overnight.

Crews were called to the single-storey property shortly after midnight where fire was found in the property's ceiling cavity.

Nobody was injured in the blaze, but the property sustained extensive damage.

The fire was extinguished shortly before 3am, and fire investigators will be working to determine a cause from this morning.
