Schools in Nelson have come out of lockdown after a Nayland College received an email threatening violence against students, a school principal says.
Police had earlier closed Nayland Road and put cordons in place, which have since been lifted.
A person has been spoken to by police.
There was no threat to the public after the incident and no further police action was required, police said.
Nayland College principal Daniel Wilson said in a statement the school immediately contacted police after receiving the email.
"After a thorough assessment, police advised that there was no credible threat, and students were safely released a short time later than usual.
"As an added precaution, Broadgreen Intermediate and Nayland Primary were also placed into lockdown," the statement said.
In a post on Facebook, councillor for Nelson Māori Ward Kahu PakiPaki said "armed police were called to ensure a threat was not carried out".
"Expecting our kids to be making their way home shortly," the post said.
