Thirteen sections of state highways that run through urban areas will keep their lower speed limits according to the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) Waka Kotahi.
The NZTA did the speed reviews in the wake of the 2024 Setting of Speed rule which reverses speed reductions introduced since 2020 and is due to come into affect by 1 July, 2025.
After receiving strong community and stakeholder feedback preferrencing the lowered speeds, NZTA reviewed 16 of the 38 sections of highway affected by the 2024 rule change.
The agency said after considering all of the safety, technical, cost and consultation information, it was decided that 13 of the 16 sections would retain their lower speed limits.
The majority of the 13 locations are short stretches of state highway heading into or out of small townships, where drivers are already naturally slowing down.
It includes four stretches of road in Northland, including SH1 Kaitaia. Four stretches of road in Waikato, including SH1 at Tūrangi.
Other regions include the Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Whanganui, Canterbury and the Top of the South.
Changes will be in place by 1 July.
