Five people have been injured, one critically, in a serious two-vehicle crash in Clive in Hawke's Bay.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Mill and Richmond roads shortly before 9.30am on Sunday.

Fire and Emergency shift manager Murray Dunbar said two people trapped in one of the vehicles had to be cut free.

A St John ambulance spokesperson said five people were taken to hospital, one with critical injuries, while two patients were in a serious condition, and two others sustained moderate injuries.

Police remain at the crash site and said both roads were closed with diversions in place.
