An Air New Zealand flight between Auckland and Blenheim has had to unexpectedly land at New Plymouth airport.

Air New Zealand's chief safety officer Nathan McGraw said pilots on flight NZ5509 noticed an electrical issue during the flight.

The aircraft landed safely about 12.38pm Sunday and emergency services were on standby at the airport as a precaution.

"Our maintenance team will now inspect the aircraft, before it can return to service, and we are working to get customers on to their final destinations as quickly as possible," McGraw said
