Fire and Emergency (FENZ) crews were called to Christchurch Airport after a report a plane had engine problems.
FENZ said Flight NZ5804 from Christchurch to Tauranga, an ATR-72, was on the taxiway and there was no sign of fire.
Air New Zealand said the flight was cancelled "after pilots noted an aircraft system indication alert before take off".
"In line with standard operating procedures, emergency services attended the aircraft on the runway as a precaution."
There were about 70 people on board.
Air NZ said customers would be "bussed back to the terminal, and our maintenance team will now inspect the aircraft before it can return to service".
"We are working to get customers to their final destinations as quickly as possible. We thank our customers for their patience and understanding."
