Police say they are "incredibly grateful" an officer shot in Auckland's Flat Bush only suffered minor injuries.

A officer was shot in the leg with an air rifle as police were conducting enquiries at a property on Chapel Road on Monday.

She was taken to hospital and later discharged to recover at home.

"She's in good spirits and is being provided wraparound support," Counties Manukau District Commander, Superintendent Shanan Gray said.

"This could have had a very different outcome, and we're incredibly thankful she only suffered a minor injury.

"Our staff often face dangerous situations and I'm thankful to all those who brought the matter to a swift resolution."

After the shooting, the man refused to exit the property despite numerous attempts by police to engage with him.

Police then surrounded the property and evacuated nearby residents.

The Police Air Support Unit Eagle also temporarily closed the airspace over the address while cordons were put in place.

"After more than three hours, the decision was made for members of the Armed Offenders Squad to enter the property and arrest the man," Gray said.

"A search of the property located an air rifle, and the man has now been charged."

A 47-year-old man has been charged with using a firearm against a law enforcement officer, injures with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and two counts of breaching Electronically Monitored bail.

He will appear in Manukau District Court on Tuesday.
