More chips are needed to boost a Crown research group's brand new supercomputer.
Earth Sciences has only just installed the 'Cascade' machine, giving it three times more power for the likes of weather forecasting.
It now needs another $1.6 million worth of GPUs - or supercomputer chips - so scientists can go further.
"Researchers are demanding additional GPU capacity and capability in several areas. Including both computational codes and new AI & Machine Learning techniques," said a tender document.
The organisation already has a bunch of Nvidia chips bought in 2021 for its Silverdale site. It now wants to add the same at nearby Hobsonville in Auckland.
Earth Sciences began in July from the merger of NIWA and GNS, with MetService to be added later.
