Homes have been damaged and thousands are without power as heavy winds lash the lower North Island.
Gusts of up to 130 kilometres have been hitting Wellington and gales have brought down trees in Wairarapa.
Meanwhile, there have been two slips on West Coast highways as a band of heavy rain moved across the South Island overnight.
