Auckland Grammar School students in Year 9 and Year 10 have been told to stay home after exposure to an infected measles case.

School principal Tim O'Connor told RNZ a person with measles was at the school on 24 October.

"Students in Forms 3 and 4 may have been in contact with this person," an email to parents said.

O'Connor said officials would begin contact tracing and identify any students who did not have records of two doses of MMR vaccination after the age of 12 months.

He told Morning Report the decision was made in consultation with health officials.

He said parents provided vaccination records upon enrolling their child, which helped them keep tabs.

"So, last night in working with public health, we were able to send through all of our students' details and including their MMR records where we held them and we do hold a majority of records for those students," O'Connor said.

"But public health do want to check all of those records and then communicate with the students and their families who do not have immunisation records."

O'Connor said he held extensive conversations with health authorities regarding shutting off school to Year 9 and 10.

He said none of their senior school students were on the grounds at the time of the infectious person because they were either on study leave or sitting examinations.

O'Connor said if someone was not vaccinated, they were not able to go on campus until health officials deemed it was safe for them to do so.

He couldn't say if it was a student or staff member that was infected, but was hopeful to have Year 9 and 10 back at school on Monday.

On Thursday, health officials confirmed two more cases of measles - both in Auckland - bringing the number in the current outbreak to 13, with more than 2000 close contacts identified so far.

Together with the 12 cases in the separate Northland outbreak, that makes 25 known measles cases this month.
