Firefighters have battled 30 firework-related blazes around the country since they went on sale this week.

Wednesday is the final day fireworks can be sold for the year after four days on the market.

Since sales began, firework-related blazes included a house fire overnight in south Auckland; and on Monday night, emergency service crews were shot at with fireworks in Dunedin's student area.

Fire and Emergency NZ national manager Adrian Nacey told Nine to Noon wind was the biggest factor in firework-related blazes.

"You can go outside and you can feel if it is windy, and if it is - do not set off fireworks, it is that simple."

Nacey said fireworks caused issues when they ended up in areas that made it difficult for them to be put out.

He said lighting fireworks was banned from most public areas.

New Zealand First has now introduced a member's bill to ban the public sale and use of fireworks.

"Enough is enough," party leader Winston Peter said in a media release.

"The taxpayer should not be spending millions on something that drastically impacts pets, causes the inevitable fires, and causes havoc for our emergency services.

"The abuse and misuse of fireworks has far outgrown any of the benefits."

Peters said his party's Fireworks Prohibition Legislation Bill would stop the retail sale, manufacture and importation of fireworks for private use.

Approved public displays would continue, he said.
