One week since a wind storm tore through the country's south, some Clutha district farmers say the financial hit could be harsher than they originally feared.

The Clutha District Council is hopeful power may be restored to the remaining properties over the next few days after last month's severe winds.

The damaging winds cut power to 25,000 properties across the lower South Island.

Just over 200 people in the Clutha District remained without power as of Tuesday afternoon.

The council said it hoped to have good news to share from PowerNet on Wednesday afternoon.

Boil water notices remain in place for much of the district, excluding Balclutha, Kaitangata, Wangaloa, Milton and Waihola.

The notices were precautionary to safeguard people's health, the council said.

"In this case, we've had power failure at plants, which makes it impossible to obtain accurate data that tell us whether the water is safe and free from harmful micro-organisms."

Tapanui reservoirs were still struggling, sitting at 49 percent on Wednesday morning.

The council said some properties using the Richardson South Rural Water Supply and in Kaka Point were encouraged to delay using large volumes of water after a generator issue at a local treatment plant overnight on Tuesday.

The Puerua Water Treatment Plant was back on mains power but the council said the reservoir emptied overnight and needed time to recover.
