State Highway 6 has been closed in both directions between Gibbston and Cromwell in Central Otago, after a two-vehicle crash left a car in a bank.

Police said several people were injured in the incident west of the Roaring Meg Power Station in the Kawarau Gorge at about noon Sunday.

New Zealand Transport Agency said motorists should expect significant delays, and asked them to avoid the area or delay their journey where possible.
