There has been a moderate 4.8 magnitude earthquake in the Tararua District.
GeoNet says the quake struck 15km north-east of Pongaroa at 11.47am and was at a depth of 7km.
More than 470 people have reported feeling the quake.
Following the quake, there have been four smaller quakes in the same area before 12.30pm.
The largest was a magnitude 4.4 quake which struck at a depth of 10km at 12.17pm.
