Mr Peters said he was at a function a week ago on Friday when he discussed the Prime Minister leaving.
"They asked what was going to happen and I said, 'well if anything is going to happen, I think Mr Key is going to be going very, very soon and I think there is going to be an early election'.
"Then there was a bet on this about the proposition of Prime Minister Mr Key going and I took the bet up and I won it."
Mr Peters says the Prime Minister had enjoyed a "scintillating run", smiling his way through and finding that nothing stuck to him no matter what happened.
