The Emergency Management Minister has overstated by 10 times how much is being spent to replace the Beehive bunker.

Mark Mitchell told Morning Report the government is investing in a better emergency management system.

He said it had already made a "massive" commitment of over $100m for a "world class Emergency Management Centre in Wellington".

The cramped and old bunker under the Beehive, and its poor communications systems, ventilation and even toilets, was found badly wanting as a control centre in Cyclone Gabrielle two years ago.

When RNZ questioned the figure, after a check on Budget 2024 announcements, Mitchell's office responded: "Apologies, it is $10.5 million, not $100 million."

The site of a new centre has yet to be chosen.
