A man is in a critical condition in hospital after being shot in a stand-off with police in Motueka.
The police said that Ford William Hurinui, 27, was being sought for breaching parole conditions.
They said they attempted to stop his vehicle about 3.30pm and, when Mr Hurinui did not stop, they chased him for a short way through residential roads to a dead-end street.
They said he confronted officers with a gun; police officers tried to negotiate and he was shot shortly after 4pm.
Mr Hurinui was then arrested and given medical attention before being taken to Nelson Hospital, where he was operated on.
He is expected to be transferred to Wellington Hospital tonight and placed in intensive care.
Mr Hurinui was shot and arrested. Staff immediately rendered first aid and called an ambulance. He is currently in critical condition.

At a news conference this evening, Tasman District Commander Superintendent Karyn Malthus said officers negotiated with Mr Hurinui for about half an hour before he was shot. She said he did not fire at the police.
There will be a full investigation into the incident and the Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) is being notified.
