About a hundred pigs have perished in a fire at a piggery in Waikato.
A fire service spokesman said members of the public raised the alarm at about 8.20pm after driving past the blaze, just north of Ngaruawahia.
The spokesman said one building in a large piggery complex was well alight when fire crews arrived and the 100 pigs inside died.
Smoke had filtered into two nearby buildings where more pigs were kept, but those animals were able to be rescued.
The spokesman said the fire was now under control and fans were being used to ventilate the other buildings.
He was unsure whether the rescued pigs were receiving veterinary treatment.
