The bee industry will be working with the Primary Industry Ministry on a nationwide survey on bee health, expected to take place later this year.
The National Beekeepers Association says New Zealand does not have the colony collapse disorder that has wiped out large numbers of bees overseas.
Chief executive Daniel Paul says the aim of the survey is to start bench-marking what is happening in New Zealand apiaries.
He says the survey will be conducted under the new Beekeeping Industry Advisory Council, set up by two organisations to deal with the ministry on biosecurity issues.
