The New Zealand number one shot a six under 66 in the first round at the Memorial Tournament at the Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio.
Lee had a relatively quiet front nine, mixing six pars with a birdie and a bogey before he holed out for eagle from 80 metres on the par five seventh.
The 25-year-old really found his range after the turn, making four birdies along with five pars.
American Dustin Johnson is the outright leader at eight under, compatriot Brandon Steele is a shot back.
