After clincing this year's Diamond League title with victory earlier this week at a meet in Zurich, Walsh placed second in Thum with a distance of 21.18m.
The winner was Tomas Stanek of the Czech Republic, with 21.26m.
Walsh now moves on to the World Challenge in Zagreb, Croatia, for his last European event of the year before returning home to Christchurch.
The Croatian meet was where Walsh had his first European circuit victory in 2014, and after defending the title last year, the New Zealander will be looking for the three-peat.
The shot put event is held in the Zagreb town square at 4.30am Tuesday, NZ time.
