New Zealand tennis player Lulu Sun's run at the US Open is over.

Sun was beaten in the second round of the women's singles 6-2, 6-3 by 19th seed Elise Mertens of Belgium.

Sun got off to a shaky start in the first set, losing her first two services games before getting one break back.

However, Mertens then closed out the set with another break.

Twenty-four-year-old Sun started the second set in similar fashion as she was broken by the Belgian.

The pair traded games for the rest of the set until Mertens broke again to take the match.

Sun made 26 unforced errors compared to Mertens 15.

Sun who is ranked 164 reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon in 2024, but this is the first time she has got past the first round in any of the other three grand slam tournaments.

Mertens, 29, is a former world number one in doubles and a five-time grand slam doubles champion and won at Flushing Meadows in 2019.

Mertens has won 10 singles titles during her career and made the singles quarter-finals at both the 2019 and 2020 US Opens.
