Ryan Papenhuyzen granted immediate release from Melbourne Storm

  • The Melbourne Storm has granted an immediate release to Ryan Papenhuyzen, who had one year remaining on his contract.
  • Papenhuyzen won the Clive Churchill medal when the Storm defeated the Penrith Panthers to win the 2020 NRL grand final.
  • Papenhuyzen will be taking time away from rugby league to consider his future, according to a statement from the Storm.
  • Melbourne Storm premiership winner Ryan Papenhuyzen has been granted an immediate release from the club, with one year still remaining on his contract.

    Papenhuyzen played 113 matches for the Storm, including being named the Clive Churchill medallist in Melbourne's 26-20 win over the Penrith Panthers in the 2020 NRL grand final.

    A statement from the Storm said the 27-year-old wanted to take time away from rugby league to consider his future.

    Papenhuyzen's final match for the Storm was this year's grand final, when they were defeated by the Brisbane Broncos.

    "I've loved my time at Melbourne Storm. I've enjoyed close to a decade of incredible memories and experiences in the purple jersey. Playing in front of the Storm fans every week has made my time in Melbourne something I'll never forget," Papenhuyzen said.

    "I want to thank the club for their understanding and support throughout this process. I also want to thank my teammates, coaches and staff for all their love and support, it's been a privilege playing footy and working with you."
