Labour party leader David Cunliffe will take on the Prime Minister today in his first major speech of the year.
Mr Cunliffe says his state of the nation address will lay out a vision for a more inclusive, progressive and prosperous society.
His speech follows the Prime Minister's state of the nation speech last week, and the Green Party's on Sunday, both of which focused on education.
Former Labour MP and subsequent ACT leader Richard Prebble said Mr Cunliffe had made it harder for himself by being the third cab off the rank.
He said Mr Cunliffe needs to deliver a speech that shows Labour is different from other parties if it's to be successful at the elections.
