Watch: Australian opposition leader injures cameraman in footy kick misfire

7:27 pm on 5 April 2025

Australian opposition leader Peter Dutton's kick with kids in Darwin has gone awry, with a wayward football going straight into a cameraman off the opposition leader's boot.

One of Dutton's kicks sent the ball astray - straight into a camera held by Channel 10 camera operator Ghaith Nadir.

Dutton was heard joking, "There's your exclusive," and checking to make sure Nadir was OK.

Nadir walked away with a gash to the forehead, which has now been bandaged up.

Dutton has been asked what he plans to do to make things right with the Channel 10 cameraman.

"We're going to do two things. One I thought that I could buy him a beer this afternoon, and second - I'm going to teach him how to mark, next time. Because it was up in the air, it wasn't just a drill, and I think he had plenty of time to take it," he says.

The opposition leader broke character for a second to make it clear the cameraman in question was in fact OK, and says: "He gave me a thumbs-up before."

The Australian election between Liberal party leader Dutton and Labor Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is down for 3 May.

Dutton is also noted for in 2021 describing New Zealanders being deported from Australia as "taking out the trash".
