Briar Prastiti is the winner of the 2024 NZSO SOUNZ Tarling Trust Commission. It meant she was paid to write a new orchestral work, which she calls 'The Garden'.
More importantly, that work gets its premiere with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra this weekend.
Prastiti sat down with Bryan Crump for an interview on RNZ Concert and on the SOUNZ website to talk about her new work and the role gardens play in her life: as memory (from childhood), as a metaphor (gardens of Eden and the like) and in her imagination.
All three matter, but it is perhaps the ever-growing garden of her (and all of our) imagination which matters the most.
