The indigenous language of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands has been given a boost with a 200 thousand dollar grant from the US government.
The University of Guam has been awarded the money to develop Chamorro language teaching at the post secondary level.
The language preservation grant is the first award for the three year project.
Guam's US Congress representative, Madeleine Bordallo, says the money will ensure Chamorro language students receive equal and adequate instruction and will help preserve their traditional cultural practices and unique language.
The project will work with four colleges in Guam to develop a single teaching text for students.
