The Citizens' Constitutional Forum in Fiji says most basic principles of democracy are yet to be provided to Fijians, despite the country's new constitution.
That the view of the CCF's chief executive officer, Bulutani Mataitawakilai, as the world marks International Day for Democracy today.
The CCF reiterated its calls for the government to ratify the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights and to fully implement its democratic values.
He said the limitation clauses in the 2013 Constitution, the fast-tracking of parliamentary bills without wide public consultations, a restrictive media environment, limits on freedom of expression and information, were some of the issues that undermined democracy.
The CCF said this year's theme 'Democracy and Conflict Prevention' emphasised the need to strengthen democratic institutions to promote peace and stability, which was also in Goal 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals.
It said this could only be achieved for Fiji if the government willingly works together with everyone, irrespective of people's perceived political affiliations.
