Fiji's government has commissioned the dredging of the Waidamu river, which often floods Waicoka Village in Tailevu South.

About 200 people live in 40 houses in the village on the banks of the river, which floods during heavy downpours and high tides.
Minister of Lands Ashneel Sudhakar said the dredging was commissioned after thorough consultations.
"Dredging can play a key role in addressing the flood events in Waidamu," Mr Sudhakar said in a statement.
Minister for Waterways, Mahendra Reddy, said many communities had been affected by climate change, and Fiji's Government was coming up with "smart solutions to address" that.
Dredging work on the 18 kilometre river is expected to start this month.
