The media director of Vanuatu's largest newspaper has had his work permit rejected.
The publisher of the Daily Post, Dan McGarry, had been made to re-apply for his work permit by the labour department, but that was yesterday rejected.
In a statement, Mr McGarry said he was told his position should have been localised, but he believed it was because of his company's coverage of the government.
He said he was summoned by the prime minister, Charlot Salwai, in July, where he was berated for his so-called negative reporting.
Mr McGarry said he would fight the decision.

Meanwhile, Vanuatu's Media Association said the industry's relationship with the government was at an all-time low.
The group is calling on Prime Minister Charlote Salwai to reconsider the move and ensure Mr McGarry has access to legal rights.
Silencing media and journalists would affect a good relationship with the government, which it said was at a level never experienced by the media industry.
