A major fire has destroyed the Solomon Islands elections office in Honiara.
The fire reportedly started overnight Tuesday due to a suspected electrical fault and could not be contained by the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) Fire and Rescue Services.
Solomon Business Magazine (SBM) publisher and editor Robert Iroga told RNZ Pacific that by 10am (local time) on Wednesday, the fire had engulfed most of the building.
He spoke with the Solomon Islands Electoral Commission chair Taeasi Sanga, who said she was disappointed by the events.
An investigation into the blaze will be conducted by the RSIPF.
In the meantime, it is unclear what official records have been lost to the fire and how much has been backed up online.
