Samoan cricketer Ross Taylor left the field injured at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Asia and EAP qualifier in Oman on Friday morning (NZ time).

The former New Zealand star retired hurt against Papua New Guinea in their second group C game at the Al Amerat Cricket Ground.

There is no confirmation of what injury Taylor suffered other than the ICC update stating that he had to leave the field after 12 overs and when Samoa was 78 for 2.

Papua New Guinea had set a total of 117 runs and Samoa reached the target with nine balls remaining and six wickets in hand.

Samoa's Sean Solia, who was named man of the match, top scored in the match with 62 runs off 45 balls.

Earlier, PNG captain Assad Vala claimed 38 runs.

Samoa will await the result of the PNG vs Oman game to see if they qualify for the round of six play-off as a top-two team from the group. That match takes place on Friday Oman time (early morning Saturday NZ time).

As of Thursday night local time, Oman and Samoa had two points each from their wins while PNG will be fighting to draw level.

The United Arab Emirates and Qatar were tied with two points each in group A while group B has Nepal and Japan in the top two.

The top two teams from each of the three pools will qualify for the round of six.

Three teams from the nine-side competition will qualify for the Twenty20 World Cup in 2026.
