Over the years, many independent community newspapers have transitioned to producing online-only content, been swallowed up by larger news outlets, or sadly closed.
Throughout it all, the Independent Herald, which covers news in six Wellington suburbs, has stood strong.
The paper has survived possible takeovers and changes in technology, and has won major awards for investigative journalism.
The Independent Herald is celebrating it's 50th birthday this year. Its first editor Ruth Thomas, who was in the position until 1993 talks to Jesse about the paper's milestone.
