The sound of diamonds: Composing jewellery soundscapes for the blind

From Culture 101, 12:40 pm today

We often associate jewellery with the way it looks or perhaps how they feel. Particularly with diamonds, it's about how they sparkle and shimmer. But what about sound?

Auckland jeweller, Navaya and Sloane, has been embarking on a unique project. Partnering with accessibility consultancy All is for All, they've enlisted composers to create original soundscapes for low-vision and blind people. Five soundscapes were created for each of their signature rings, creating a multi-sensory experience and changing the perspective what design includes.

Martine Abel-Williamson, the President of the World Blind Union, was invited to feel the rings and describe how she felt and what she sensed based on touch. The descriptions of the feelings, texture, and emotion were given to two composers at Liquid Studios, Thomas Darlow and Peter Van der Fluit who created original soundscapes to match the jewellery.

Martine Abel-Williamson, the President of the World Blind Union, and composer, Thomas Darlow, spoke to Culture 101 about the experience.
