Music 101 for Saturday 16 November 2024
1.20 Nick Bollinger’s NZ Essential albums: Bic Runga – Birds
If it were Bic Runga’s goal, as she once suggested, to make music that would “alter the listener’s mind in some way” she achieved it with this record more than any other.
Birds is an album with a distinct sound and mood – even amongst her rich and varied catalogue. In this episode of Essential New Zealand Albums Nick Bollinger digs into the details of this dark masterpiece.
2.10 Fazerdaze on new album: 'People forget there's a human at the heart of it'
Fazerdaze, the artist name of Christchurch-based musician Amelia Murray is back with her long awaited second album Soft Power.
After receiving glowing reviews for her earlier releases including her debut album Morningside, Fazerdaze spent years touring throughout the world, resulting in burnout.
After taking some time out, she has returned with a new album that represents Fazerdaze coming out of the darkness, with a sound that is bigger but still holds true to her distinctive dreamy guitar pop.
2:40 Review: Patterns in Repeat by Laura Marling
Patterns in Repeat alludes to cycles of motherhood, the British folk musician's songs influenced by the birth of her daughter in multiple ways.
3.10 Musical Chairs: Shihad
Earlier this week the Wellington band Shihad announced they were putting up their horns for the final time with a nationwide farewell tour in early 2025.
After nearly 40 years together, the rocking four piece has created 10 studio albums, collected 18 Aotearoa Music Awards, and received an induction into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame.
To celebrate the end of a legendary era, we are dipping back in time to play an interview with a youthful Tom Larkin and Jon Toogood from Shihad - talking to Malcom Young back in 1998 for an early edition of Musical Chairs
