Jennifer Reid: The punk who sings broadside ballads

From Music 101, 1:15 pm on 12 April 2025

Jennifer Reid is passionate about preserving aural traditions. Reid travels the globe as a champion of the Industrial Revolution work song, Lancashire dialect and clog dancer.

Most of her music is acapella and borrows from old broadside ballads she has helped nurture in the modern world through performance.

Her new record, The Ballad of the Gatekeeper, is a culmination of 16 years of studying 19th century British history and is almost ready to be released.

Jennifer joined Maggie Tweedie in the RNZ studio and performed a ballad for the RNZ listeners.
