John Lethbridge's photography with Jane Campion
Whether it be recent headlines ahead of Monday’s Oscars or her acclaimed filmmaking, director Jane Campion is known to surprise. No more so than in the reveal of her role as a young artist as collaborator and performer in little seen photographs created by and with artist John Lethbridge in the late 1970s and early 1980s, before she became a filmmaker.
John Lethbridge studied at the Wellington Design School and the Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland before moving to Australia in 1975, where he established a successful career as an artist. In Auckland Lethbridge came to prominence under the tutelage of Jim Allen at ELAM as part of the post-object art set of the early 1970s, exhibiting at Auckland Art Gallery, He was a key figure in Australian art in the 1980s.
