A local resident says about half a dozen workers and several trucks are on site at a sinkhole which has opened up in Papamoa.
The resident, who didn't want to be named, says the hole bordering the footpath on Golden Sands Drive is really large and probably several metres deep.
Tauranga City Council says they are assessing the situation and making the site as safe as possible.

Temporary fencing is going up around the hole and the footpath next to the sinkhole has been removed.
A council spokesperson says more information will be provided throughout the day as it becomes available.
