The head of New Zealand founded jewellery retailer Michael Hill International has died.

In a stock exchange statement the company said Daniel Bracken died overnight after an adverse reaction to a treatment for an underlying medical condition.

The board extended its "deepest and sincerest" condolences to his family and friends.

"We thank Daniel for his outstanding leadership and dedication to the Michael Hill Group and our people over the past 7 years. He will be dearly missed."

Bracken was appointed to head the Australian based company in 2018 after previously working for the well known Burberry London fashion brand.

He oversaw a revamp and expansion of Michael Hill stores and products, expanding their presence in the New Zealand, Australian, and Canadian markets.

"Daniel was a passionate retailer, an innovative and strategic thinker and an inspiring leader who transformed the Michael Hill Group into the company that it is today," the company said.
